Original vintage photo-insert Christmas card, estimated circa 1940–1949, from the historic Moore Estate in Franklin, Kentucky (Gilbertine Moore, 1914–2008). The card features an actual silver-gelatin family photograph mounted into a printed red card stock folder, a common commercial format for personalized holiday cards of this era. The printed interior verse is handwritten in white ink and reads:“May all your days be happy and bright, and all your Xmases be white!!”accompanied by musical note and treble clef illustrations. In photographs the photo has the appearance of silvery sheen or strong speckling in some lighting due to gelatin print surface reflection on the textured surface; in hand, it is thick, has a beautiful luster sheen, minimal noise and is in excellent condition with strong contrast. Heavy cardstock and nicely preserved. Pictures of the card were taken in varied lighting to give you the most accurate representation possible.
The photo depicts a classic mid-century family scene at Christmastime: a mother knitting by the fireplace, a father relaxing with a pipe, two young children on the rug with a puppy, and stockings hung on the mantel. In the background, a Black domestic worker in uniform serves the family. This candid vernacular photograph serves as a documented piece of mid-century American social history, of interest to collectors, researchers, and institutions building archives of Black Americana and domestic life ephemera. The card is captioned “THE MOORES” along the left edge of the photo mount.
