Item DescriptionVintage Pacific Northwest Coast Painted Cedar Bentwood Box – True Kerfed Single-Plank ConstructionUp for sale is a beautiful vintage Pacific Northwest Coast style lidded bentwood storage box. This piece features traditional formline totemic face designs meticulously painted in classic black and dark red pigments on all four sides.Authentic Traditional Construction & Materials:
Unlike modern souvenir pieces made from separate flat panels, this box is crafted using the traditionalkerfed and steam-bent method. It was made from asingle plank of dense, old-growth cedar woodwith exceptionally tight grain lines that wrap seamlessly around the corners. The board was grooved, steamed, and bent into shape, leaving only one vertical corner seam secured by a reinforcing wooden peg/dowel near the rim. It is topped with a heavy, well-fitted wooden lid.Dimensions:

Artisan Workshop Markings & Features:

Artisan Orientation Mark:Features a hand-carved cross/plus symbol incised onto the inner lid flange alongside a historic touch of vintage wood putty at the corner intersection. This alignment mark indicates exactly how to rotate the lid to ensure a flush, snug fit.
Inventory Sticker:The underside of the base retains a small historic dealer or collection inventory sticker reading "NWC INDIAN BOX 94".

Wood & Structure:The painted box remains structurally sound with an attractive aged patina and minor surface scuffs/paint wear consistent with mid-20th-century age. There is minor, natural wood separation/splintering at the top rim of the vertical corner seam from decades of wood tension relaxing.
Lid Condition:The lid shows historic insect tracking and small pinholes. This natural wear serves as excellent physical proof of its true age and vintage authenticity.
