This mallard has been flying since the 1950s.
Made by Stangl Pottery in Trenton, New Jersey, this vintage Sportsman ashtray turns an everyday object into a piece of American pottery art. A colorful mallard sweeps across the blue-gray center, surrounded by a warm brown rim with sculpted rests.
The design is full of detail, from the mallard’s green head and blue wing to the raised feather-like shapes along the rim. It’s a great example of the sporting and wildlife designs that found their way into mid-century American homes.
Stangl has a long history in American pottery. The company grew from Fulper Pottery, with Martin Stangl taking control in 1929. The Stangl name was officially adopted in the 1950s, and the company continued making pottery until 1978.
This piece is clearly marked on the bottom:

DUCK
Originally made as an ashtray, you can give it a completely new job today. Use it as a catchall for keys and change, place it on a coffee table with vintage books, or simply display it as pottery. The mallard makes it especially good for cabin, lodge, hunting, sporting or rustic décor.
