Original World War I–era U.S. Army leather gaiters, dating to approximately 1917–1918. Constructed of heavy brown leather with period-correct stitching, buckles, and hardware. Overall appearance and construction are consistent with known U.S. military-issued gaiters from the Great War.The exterior of the gaiters bears a period handwritten name, “Catlett L. Buckner,” applied directly to the leather. Handwritten identification of personal equipment was a common practice among soldiers during World War I to prevent loss or misidentification of issued gear.Based on the presence of original period markings and available historical records, these gaiters are attributed to a World War I–era service member of that name. No additional military documentation accompanies the item, and attribution is made in good faith based on the physical evidence present on the artifact.Condition is consistent with age and field use.
