DescriptionThis vintage Japanese ceramic wall plaque depicts the “Three Human Bomb Heroes,” three Imperial Japanese Army soldiers whose deaths during the First Shanghai Incident in 1932 became widely known throughout Japan.The three men were military engineers named Takeji Eshita, Susumu Kitagawa, and Inosuke Sakue. During fighting in Shanghai, China, they carried a long tube filled with explosives toward enemy barbed-wire defenses, attempting to clear a path for advancing Japanese troops. All three were killed in the explosion.Their story received enormous attention in Japan and was commemorated through newspapers, films, patriotic songs, and school education.The plaque features raised portraits of the three soldiers in uniform. The inscription at the top appears to read “Churetsu Kanjitsu,” expressing loyalty and sacrifice, while the bottom reads “Three Human Bomb Heroes.”More than a military commemorative, this piece offers a glimpse into how soldiers, sacrifice, and wartime heroism were portrayed in Japanese society during the 1930s.Size: Approximately 18.5 × 13.5 × 2.5 cm.Condition: Shows age-related wear, surface marks, dirt, and areas of paint loss.
