Original period color-printed postcard featuring the steam-hauled Southern Belle Pullman train behind London, Brighton & South Coast Railway No. 422, an H2-class 4-4-2 Atlantic built at Brighton Works. No. 422 entered service in July 1911 and was later named North Foreland.
The postcard dates approximately from 1911–1922, before the LB&SCR became part of the Southern Railway on January 1, 1923. The locomotive is shown in lined umber livery with the Pullman train behind it. The Southern Belle was the steam-era predecessor of the Brighton Belle, and all six original H2 Atlantics were eventually scrapped.
The divided reverse is captioned “L.B. & S.C.R. ‘Southern Belle.’” Published by The Locomotive Publishing Co., Ltd., 3 Amen Corner, London, E.C. Unused, unposted and unwritten.
