WE have asked before what it was liketo ride a Honda 50, we are nowable to answer the question in a consider-ably more elaborate manner after spend-ing a few hours with one of the most re-markable little motorcycles in the world.Designated the CR-110, this Honda 50was designed to fill the gap between thefull factory supported grand prix machinesand the “private” riders the factory want-ed, for obvious reasons, to do well in In-ternational competition.Honda’s CR series machines are someof the most interesting motorcycles around, they include a 125cc twin. 250cc and305cc twins, and of course the 50cc sin-gle. They all employ double overheadcamshafts and four valves per cylinder, two intake and two exhaust. The 50ccCR-110 has an integral eight speed gear-box that requires more musicianship thanmechanical ability to manipulate, truly one“rows” such a little tiddler around thecourse. But what fun.Horsepower is rated as 7.0 @ 12,700rpm on the version delivered with a fullmuffler, lighting equipment and road go-ing gear. Our test bike was outfitted forracing with a full fairing, tuned mega-phone, no lights, etc. We were told itspower was 9.5 hp @ 14,000 rpm, thoughwe used 15,000 as a maximum and theengine pulls remarkably all the way from11,000 where its power is approximately5.5. A surprisingly flat torque is deliveredwith a peak at a little over 11,000 rpm, accounting partially for its strength atthat relatively low rpm. We fully expectedthe little screamer to be somewhat “peaky”and to refuse to run at anything less thanaround 13,000 rpm but were pleasantlysurprised at how flexible the radical en-gine was. Bore & stroke are 40mm x39mm, compression ratio is 10.5 to 1 asit is on all CR and RC series Hondas.Collectors of motorcycle sounds will beshocked to hear the low, throaty singlecylinder sounds much like a larger ma-chine. Getting the high revving engine un-der way presented a spot of bother, butonce it pulls in first gear it is a simplematter to keep the revs up by just shiftingall the time. Memory training might help, though it matters little precisely whichgear one is in; if the revs starting droppingoff it is a simple matter to flick the leverup or down for a better ratio. We found that full throttle could bemaintained around almost every foot ofRiverside Raceway, a very fast circuit bythe way, and by simply remembering todown shift three or four times for eachcorner we were able to put up somecreditable times all things considered. Wewere accompanied to the track by theowner of the little jewel; Bill Robertsonof Honda Burbank, Hollywood and NorthHollywood, who brought with him youngTony Murphy, number one in the Ameri-can Federation of Motorcyclist scheme ofthings, and his Service Manager, Alan Foxwho kept things humming for us.Everyone’s mouths fell open whenMurphy took the Honda through our speedtraps at just under 90 mph, proof of howserious Honda’s intentions were in buildingsuch an unusual motorcycle. It is interest-...
