AllTHEGOODSTUFFKawasaki\'s 350 Bighornsingle is the first big boreenduro machine from JapanBack in 1964 one of the Spanishmotorcycle manufacturers released anew type of machine to the Americanmarket. It was the first production light-weight street/trail machine. It causedthe motorcyclists, and even great num-bers of non bike enthusiasts, to reallytake a second look at this new machine. It was a single cylinder two stroke withsemi-knobby tires, and was alsoequipped with full electrics to make itstreet legal. A few motorcycle maga-zines immediately had this new honestto gosh street/trail machine on theircovers. There was a lot of excitementover this new breed. Most thought it was a keen idea, butwhat exactly could it be used for. Inthose days a motorcycle rider eitherrode on the road or in the dirt. Therecouldn\'t possibly be a machine thatcould do both well or could there?A few years passed and in the mean-time the industrious Japanese factorieswere producing a multitude of smalldisplacement woods type trail ma-chines. They had knobby tires, lights, and usually a monocoque stamped steelframe Most of them were in the 90ccbracket and the power was limited. Theywere heavy for their size, but they wouldtake you just about anywhereThen in 1967 one of the Orientalfactories released the first real massproduction street/trail (or enduro) typemachine. It caught on like wildfire, thetime was ripe. It was light in weight, attractive, street legal and was at homeon the trail or road Since then theJapanese and European factories havebeen hard at work producing newer andbetter enduro type machinery. TheJapanese machines had the advantageof being available in large quantities, with high quality components and goodelectrics. The European machines were79a little more expensive, but they had theupper hand in the handling and suspen-sion departments. It was only inevitable that one factorywould soon come out with the bestfeatures of both A roadster and a dirtbike. Kawasaki\'s release of their 350cctwo stroke single probably surprisedsome of the other manufacturers whohave been contemplating the samemove. In our testing of the Bighorn wewere rather surprised with some of thenew ideas that Kawasaki has in-corporated in the machine. In an attempt to incorporate all thegood qualities of an off road machine, some of the frill and dash used on otherbikes of this type are missing. The maincolor scheme is brown with white back-ground on the gas tank and underside ofthe fenders. In the comfort area, the Kawasakifactory has gone all out to top the otherenduro machines. Excepting the handle-bars, the Bighorn is exceptionally com-fortable. The saddle is wide, long andthick and provides optimum cushionfor the smallest or largest of riders. TheKawasaki’s new Bighorn hasused most of the qualities neededto produce a fine mannered offroad machine that is just as athome on the road. The muffler is fairly quiet fora large displacement single. The pipe and heat shield aretucked in nicely and pegs arewell located and spring loaded...
