■ The first 250 Kawasaki to be im-ported into the United States was the238 scrambler, in 1967. Two yearslater, the first street/trail dual-purpose250 Kawasaki appeared, utilizing adetuned version of the same 238engine. This four-speed enduromachine bore more than a passingresemblance to the Yamaha DT-1. Itremained on the market for two years,designated the F4 Sidewinder.But these early models were ob-viously stopgap measures byKawasaki, while their engineersdeveloped their own unique designswhich would be copies of no othercompanies. The original 350 Bighornintroduced in 1970 was the first of thenew breed of street/trail machines.One of the smaller brothers thatfollowed is the new F8 250 “moto-en-duro” model for 1972. While themachine would not be competitive inmotocross, it is more than adequate formost enduro events. Perhaps thebiggest disadvantage of the Kawasaki250 is that it inevitably suffers fromcomparison with the F9 350.
