When you have the world’s best-sell-ing motorcycle what do you do for anencore? Honda decided that the 350 ser-ies needed an update and they went thewhole route. There’s still a CB (low andblack racing-style pipes for street andsome dirt use) versions of the 1974 360just as there were for the 350 series, butabout the only things that the 360’sshare with the 350’s are the wheel rims.Roughly one-fifth of all the motorcyclesin all the world are 350 Hondas (literal-ly millions of them!) and, now, they’rebeing replaced with a 360. So, for Hon-da’s sake, the new machine had betterbe good. It isn’t.If you’re really enthused about350-sized Hondas then rush out and buya 1973 350 because the 360 just isn’t asgood a machine. Honda decided to adda sixth speed to the 360 and a discbrake is optional (stock on the “G” ver-sion of the CB 360 only) when you canfind one, but the sixth speed isn’t need-ed and you can easily convert a 350 todiscs if you really want it that badly. The extra 30 or so cubic centimeters ac-tually gives a bit less performance thenlast year’s model and the not-so-rigid350 frame has been replaced with onethat feels like rubber. If all you careabout is having a Honda with zero mileson it and you’re riding consists purelyof commuting back and forth to workyou’ll appreciate the smoother ride andsilky engine of the new machine; theride is definitely more on the luxuryside this year. The styling is completelynew, of course, but it’s only what you’dexpect in terms of chrome and colorstripes on a model-year change, nothinglike the totally-new mechanicals. We haven’t yet ridden what couldreally be called a “bad” Honda butthere are darn few good ones amongtheir model line. We do feel that motor-cycle enthusiasts, as well as newcomersto the two-wheeled fun world, haveevery right to expect a totally new Hon-da, like the CB360 series, to be at leastas good as the two-stroke Elsinore mo-to-crossers or the XL-250 or the 500...
