Daytona Beach is historically known for its beach, where motorized vehicles are permitted on some hard-packed sand beaches. Motorsports on the beach became popular, and the Daytona Beach and Road Course hosted races for over 50 years, replaced in 1959 by Daytona International Speedway. The city is the headquarters of NASCAR. 1925 – The Ocean Pier and Casino at Daytona Beach opened its doors on this date. One of the most recognizable features on one Florida’s most popular beaches, the Ocean Pier, built in 1925, replaced an earlier structure known as Keating Pier which was constructed in the late 19th century. After a devastating fire in 1920, Jeter McMillan built the new casino. Over the years the pier has hosted thousands of charity balls, dances, civic events, weddings, and beach goers from around the world.
