By all accounts that we can ascertain, this saw is a Simmonds Blue Ribbon No 8 Skew Back Cross Cut Saw with a 26" blade. Almost identical to the drawing that appears in the 1919 lineup of Simmonds saws as presented by Brian Welch on his Simmonds Hand Saw collector site, The medallion shows the earlier 1887 patent date. Because of wear, the patent date on the etching is unclear.The etching on the saw blade is worn, but the famed ribbon indicating the earlier, higher quality variety of saws made by Simmonds is readily visible. Absent from the catalog drawing is the brass handle guard which the saw offered in this listing includes. It is unclear as to why some saws included this finish while others did not. Regardless it is a nice feature and beautiful addition to a relatively rare model of early, Blue Ribbon, Simmonds saws.
