Vern HancockMATCHLESSFirst Home in Cactus DerbyLammy Lamoreaux rides them all and has awonderful time. Not a bad piece of road either.AN annual Enduro that is put on bythat very active and efficient mo-torcycle club, the Riverside Bombers,The Cactus Derby, is without a doubtone of the best that is staged in theWestern area, but has not received thewide publicity it deserves. The run tra-ditionally starts at midnight on Satur-day night of a chosen week-end in thelate fall, and continues straight throughthe following day with only time outfor meals. This run of between threeand four hundred miles of continuousriding makes it a very grueling ordealfor both riders and equipment. The win-ner each year can well be proud of aremarkable achievement. The 1951 Cactus Derby started to gainmomentum about the last of July when“Doc” Trainor and Howard Angell wereappointed co-chairmen of the event, scheduled for Sept. 23rd. It ended whenVern Hancock was awarded the famousDerby trophy for his win with a 30:50single Matchless road model of one ofEddie Ryan, Har-Dav Dealer in San Pedro and his side hack showup at all the tough ones. And Eddie must be pushing to that 70mark, too.(Continued on Page 25, Col. 1)A tough duo—Max Bubeck and his favorite mount the WarriorT.T. and Dave Doney on one of those Matchless thumpers thatnever seem to tire.
