He regarded the1976 introduction of Yamaha\'s TT500 asfit occasion to celebrate—and to dust offhis retired racing leathers. Many peoplehave brought their TTs to the starting linesince then, but not many have finished outin front.What do you do if you want to race yourThumper? Or maybe you just want state-of-the-art suspension and chassis per-formance, and never mind checkeredflags, trophy girls and champagne. Ifyou\'re Sparky Edmonston, West CoastTechnical Representative for LectronCarbur ‘ors, the plan is simple: tear downyour 5Cu, throw away the frame and sus-pension, and start calling on a few friends.Sparky rang up Kenny Roberts. For atime, KR had a frame shop, building chas-sis he designed for flat-tracking and cow-trailing. He once produced a dual-shockframe that used the Yamaha 500 power-plant; later, Roberts and some others con-verted that unit into a monoshocker. Bothframes employed reversible steering-head cones, allowing rake adjustmentsfrom 26 to 29 degrees and making thesingle bike suitable for different applica-tions. When Roberts closed down hisframe shop, he kept five 500 frames andstashed the framing jigs and the re-mainder of the 4130 chrome-moly tubing.Edmonston and Roberts knew eachother through their association withLectron. A connection was made, TrevorTilbury (one of KR\'s road race mechanicsin Europe) fired up his welder, and Sparkyhad a frame for his engine. A couple ofproblems had to be solved to convert theoriginal dual-shock frame into a mono-shocker. The overhead shock crowdedthe stock carburetor and forced Ed-monston to call on Rob Muzzy to fabricatea special intake manifold that would angle...
