MODESTO, CALIF., Dec. 17—A crewof Southern California Trials riderswhose sunshine-thinned blood fairly con-gealed in face of the rigorous damp, cold Northern California weather pre-vailing here today, rallied in the heat ofthe contest to, for the third consecutiveyear, return to the sun-blessed Souththe lion’s share of honors in the AnnualRedwood Reliability. Sweepstakes hon-ors for the second consecutive year wentto Nick Nicholson, A.J.S. rider of LongBeach, Calif., but only after the break-ing of a tie by emergency scoring, withJack Norman of Los Angeles riding anExcelsior. This Annual North-South Californiacontest is sponsored by the live-wiremembers of the Northern CaliforniaBritish Motorcycle Dealers Assn., withcredit for the actual laying of the out-standing event going to the local Cali-fornians Motorcycle Club, and DaveBuchmiller, the Modesto Triumph-B.S.A.dealer.In titling the contest a Reliability, theBMDA has exercised a pardonable bit ofpoetic license, as the event is actuallyan English Trials, and a mighty goodone, too. The hills, hummocks, ditches and embankments brought outthe best (and the worst) in the riders. At spots, the course was highly sensa-tional, as the riders plummeted over 30foot near-vertical mud embankments, orrode lofty razor backs on a hair-raisingdetour. While it certainly wasn’t a con-test for the faint of heart, all ridersweathered the storm without seriousmishap, due to the absence of rocks ortrees, and the shock-absorbing qualitiesof the rain-soaked grounds.Getting back to the results—Nichol-son’s Sweepstakes winning score of 987points was set in also winning the 350c.c. Class. This victory by Nicholsoncame as no surprise, as he has longproven himself to be the most consistentTrials Expert on the West Coast. Hisability to accurately appraise an ob-served section before tackling it is fullymatched by a sense of balance and co-ordination that is phenomenal, and athrill to watch. Second in the Sweep-stakes, as previously stated, went toJack Norman, winner of the 250 c.c.Class, with a like score of 987 points.Norman Sprague, Long Beach, with ascore of 984 accounted for 2nd in the250 c.c. class, and third in the sweep-stakes, riding an Excelsior. As in thecase of Nicholson, the excellent stand-...
